Anything But Federal (ABF) was formed from the remains of two bands - Troy the Snail and Xpand. The story of the band starts back in March 2006, when Ben Reugg and Michelle Anderton (who have been playing together since high school) were in search of a new drummer. Enter Paul Rishworth, a fresh, strong and solid drummer who brought with him his own distinct style. They clicked instantly, and after a few rocking jam sessions, ABF was born. After playing covers at friend’s parties, they knew that their passion really lay in writing their own originals. Two months, and countless hours of thrashing it out later, the originals 'No Compromise’ and 'A Better Part Of Me’ came into being. 'No Compromise’ demonstrates the raw energy of the band, and highlights their dynamics; while 'A Better Part Of Me’ shows the band’s softer, more emotional side.
When they finally found a practise space (which has become known simply as 'the shed’) the creative juices began flowing. 'Amongst Others’ and 'Butterfly Effect’ were written in record time – giving them four solid songs to hone and perform. After turning 'Parahaki’, one of Ben’s earlier songs that he had written as a solo artist, into one of their own, showcasing each members skills with intricate guitar work mixed with thunderous drums and bass lines that captures the true emotion of the song’s lyrics. They knew they had finally captured their own unique sound and were reaching the next level – both personally, as a band and with their music.
With six songs up their sleeves, the time had come for the public to hear the distinct sound that is ANYTHING BUT FEDERAL. Playing their first live show at Auckland’s PR Bar in April 2007, the crowd went wild for the masterfully written songs, intricate guitar riffs, hard hitting, driving drum beats and bass lines, and the absolute power and energy of the band’s sound. Now, with plenty of live performances under their belts, the band has recently recorded their debut EP which is set for release in November 2007.
